3 Things That'll Help You Draw Hair (and Fabric)

Learn to draw hair and fabric, so you can actually draw people!

This week, I showed this lesson to my teen students who are eager to get better at drawing people.  Hair and clothes are just as important as the bodies themselves. In the short demonstration, learn about the three things to keep in mind: volume, texture and value.

Volume is usually the single most important element, the artist is missing when trying to capture realism. Then, ask yourself, what texture does the hair or fabric have? If hair is curly then draw fluid, wavy lines. If hair is straight then draw straight lines. If the fabric is denim then crosshatch. Lines should be closer in the dark areas and left a white in the light areas, assuming you're working on white paper.  I taught this lesson to teenagers this week and they loved it!  Feeling comfortable with your drawings, helps tremendously with all of your other art adventures!  Our yearly Teen Class, does have a few openings.  Reach out to us on our contact-us page, to join the laster quarter of the school year, or enroll in our One-Day Teen Summer Class.
