Why We Start with Drawing

Why We Start with Drawing

Jul 17th 2025

At Kate’s Art School, we are committed to artistic growth through mastery. That’s why our classes are designed as multi-week sessions, with each level intentionally building on the last.

We now require all students to complete Drawing 100 (formerly Drawing Foundations) before moving into other mediums like watercolor, acrylic, oils, and so on. This decision comes from experience: we’ve consistently seen that students who develop strong drawing skills are more confident, more expressive, and ultimately more successful in their creative practice.

While some students may have previous drawing experience, it’s important to know that foundational courses can vary widely from one program to another. Taking Drawing 100 with us ensures you’re learning the techniques, tools, and habits that directly support the next stages of your work at our school.

Drawing 100 is the heart of our program. It goes far beyond the basics, focusing on visual thinking, craftsmanship, and essential habits that truly prepare you to grow as a painter. Many students find it so valuable they choose to repeat it, even after completing more advanced courses. I, Kate, personally try to take foundational classes like this whenever I can—they sharpen my eye, steady my hand, and always remind me of what really matters when creating clarity for the viewer.

We don't allow students to skip this foundational work.  Our community of artists value curiosity, humility, and the ongoing pursuit of growth-traits that even the most advanced artists continue to cultivate.

Lastly, while we’ve occasionally used printed photographs in our previous location as drawing and painting references (always for educational purposes and clearly labeled as such), our ultimate goal is to build each student’s ability to observe and interpret the world through their own eyes and hand, a skill developed through drawing.  We now exclusively use still-lifes.

We’re here to support you wherever you are in your journey, and we’re proud to offer a thoughtful, structured path forward.

We’d love to welcome you into that process.
